Google acquired another high-profile AI startup, excluding it from its own competition. The target of this acquisition is Character.AI, and Google has rehired the company's AI leadership. About 30 members of the research team, including co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, will work at Google DeepMind. They left Google in 2021 due to dissatisfaction with Google's bureaucracy and founded Character.AI. This agreement is unusual in many ways. Although the company's stock is unchanged, Google is paying Character.AI's investors a stake valued at $2.5 billion. Employees also receive cash equivalent to their stake and will continue to be paid at that price as their existing stock compensation continues to vest. Character.AI has raised approximately $150 million to date, and its last known valuation was $1 billion.
