The British newspaper The Guardian has announced that it will cease its official activities on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The Guardian determined that X is filled with far-right conspiracy theories and racism, making it no longer worth investing resources in. The Guardian cited Elon Musk's influence being used to shape political discourse as a main reason for leaving. However, Guardian journalists will still be able to use X personally for news gathering purposes. This decision is not unique to The Guardian. NPR and PBS also left X in 2023, and major companies such as Apple, IBM, and Disney have stopped advertising on the platform. The Guardian stated that it was able to make this decision due to its business model not relying on advertising. However, experts have pointed out that Twitter has always been more about influence than traffic, and publishers' return on investment has deteriorated over time.
