Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) language decoder that can translate a person's thoughts into text by reading their brain activities through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This breakthrough is the first time that continuous language has been non-invasively reconstructed from human brains. The AI model, similar to ChatGPT, was trained on Reddit comments and autobiographical stories to link the semantic features of recorded stories with the neural activity captured in the fMRI data. The decoder was able to interpret the gist of stories that human subjects watched or listened to or imagined. The technology is still in its early stages, but it could help people with neurological conditions that affect speech to communicate with the outside world. However, the researchers also warned of potential ethical concerns about mental privacy and the possibility of brain-reading platforms being used for nefarious applications such as government or employer surveillance.
