In 1976, computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum wrote about his secretary's interactions with his program ELIZA. He was startled to see how deeply people became emotionally involved with the computer. Weizenbaum's observation about people, however, remains durable. We keep getting owned by chatbots, writes John Bare.
