The United Auto Workers (UAW) is actively trying to unionize electric car leader Tesla. In response, Tesla has offered all of its employees a one-time pay raise to prevent unionization. In 2016, the UAW attempted to unionize after workers at Tesla's Fremont factory complained of chest pains, breathing problems, fainting spells, and convulsions, but was defeated by then-CEO Elon Musk, who promised safety improvements. This year, however, the UAW received a major boost when it signed historic labor agreements with the big three U.S. automakers - General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis - after a six-week strike last year, and is now circulating authorization cards to Tesla workers. Musk, on the other hand, has proven less popular with workers at his recently acquired X (formerly Twitter), where he immediately fired 24 critical employees and cut four-fifths of the staff.

미국 자동차노조인 United Auto Workers (UAW)가 전기차 선두주자인 테슬라 노동조합 결성을 위해 적극 나서고 있다. 이에 테슬라는 노조 결성을 막기 위해 전 직원에게 일괄적인 임금 인상을 제안하기도 했다. 2016년에도 UAW는 테슬라 프리몬트 공장 노동자들의 가슴 통증, 호흡 이상, 실신, 경련 등을 호소하자 노조 결성을 시도했지만, 당시 CEO였던 일론 머스크가 안전 개선을 약속하며 실패한 바 있다. 하지만 올해는 UAW가 지난해 6주간의 파업 끝에 미국의 3대 자동차 회사인 제너럴 모터스, 포드, 스텔란티스와 역사적인 노동 계약을 맺으면서 큰 힘을 얻었고, 테슬라 노동자들에게 가입 승인 카드를 돌리고 있다. 반면 머스크는 최근 인수한 X (구 트위터)에서 비판적인 직원 24명을 즉각 해고하고 직원 4/5를 감축하는 등 노동자들에게 인심을 얻지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
