Mark Zuckerberg's social media company Meta allegedly illegally collected the personal information of more than 1 million minors through Instagram without their parents' consent. The attorneys general of 33 U.S. states filed a lawsuit last month alleging that Meta was harming the mental health of minors, according to recently released court documents, CNN reported. Meta said it received reports of more than 1.1 million people under the age of 13 on Instagram between early 2019 and mid-year, but deactivated only a fraction of those accounts. Meta was originally prohibited from collecting personal information from children under 13 without parental consent under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In 2019, Meta was also fined $5 billion for alleged privacy violations and forced to change its practices.

마크 저커버그가 설립한 소셜미디어(SNS) 업체 메타가 인스타그램을 통해 100만 명이 넘는 미성년자들의 개인정보를 부모 동의 없이 불법으로 수집한 것으로 알려졌다. 미국 CNN방송은 26일(현지시간), 미 33개 주 정부 법무장관 겸 검찰총장이 메타가 미성년자의 정신 건강에 피해를 주고 있다며 지난달 소송을 제기한 가운데 최근 공개된 관련 법원 문서에는 이런 내용이 적시됐다고 전했다. 메타가 2019년 초부터 올해 중반까지 인스타그램을 통해 13세 미만 110여만명에 대한 보고를 받았지만, 이 가운데 일부 계정만 비활성화했다는 것이다. 메타는 본래 미국 아동 온라인 프라이버시 보호법(COPPA)에 따라 부모의 동의 없이 13세 미만 아동의 개인정보를 수집할 수 없다. 메타는 2019년에도 개인정보 보호 위반 혐의를 받아 벌금 50억달러를 부과받고 관행도 바꿔야 했다.
