Taiwanese chip design giant MediaTek is developing an Arm-based personal computer chip that will run Microsoft's Windows operating system. This development follows Microsoft's recent unveiling of a new generation of laptops featuring Arm-based chips, capable of running artificial intelligence applications that executives believe are the future of consumer computing. Microsoft's plans target Apple, which has been releasing its own Arm-based chips for Mac computers for about four years, and the optimization of Windows for Arm could threaten Intel's long-standing dominance in the PC market. MediaTek's PC chip is set to launch late next year, after Qualcomm's exclusive supply deal expires, and is based on Arm's ready-made designs. It remains unclear whether Microsoft has approved MediaTek's PC chip for the Copilot+ Windows program. Nvidia and AMD are also working on Arm designs for Windows devices, with Nvidia's PC chip development involving assistance from MediaTek.
