Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast surpassed the valuations of legacy US carmakers Ford and General Motors (GM) on its debut trading day on Nasdaq. VinFast introduced its first two gasoline-powered car models at the Paris Motor Show in 2018 and has been producing and exporting EVs in Vietnam since 2021. However, the company is still reporting losses of over half a year. Despite this, VinFast has the backing of its parent company Vingroup, led by Vietnam's tycoon Pham Nhat Vuong. VinFast's Nasdaq debut saw its stock price more than double. The company's valuation reached $85 billion at close, outstripping the valuations of both Ford and GM, which are valued under $50 billion each.
