SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, has become the first spaceport in the United Kingdom to launch a vertical rocket after receiving permission from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The authorization marks a number of firsts for the UK's developing space sector, It is the first vertical spaceport to be established on UK territory. It is the first fully licensed vertical spaceport in Western Europe. SaxaVord has been assessed by space regulators to ensure that the appropriate safety, security and environmental standards have been met to operate the spaceport and that it has the appropriate infrastructure, equipment and services to accommodate vertical space launches. A number of launch operators from around the world are currently at various stages of the Civil Aviation Authority's assessment process to launch rockets from SaxaVord's spaceport. In the not too distant future, we may see a Scottish-built rocket launching a Scottish satellite from the Scottish Spaceport.
