Reuters reported on December 4, 2023, that Intel, an American semiconductor company, won an appeal in a patent infringement lawsuit against VLSI Technology, overturning a $2.8 billion verdict. According to Reuters, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a lower court ruling that ordered Intel to pay VLSI Technology $2.18 billion in damages. This is one of the largest patent law rulings in U.S. history. The original ruling by the Waco, Texas, federal court found that Intel had infringed on two patents related to semiconductor manufacturing, and assessed damages of $1.5 billion and $675 million, respectively. The appeals court found that there was insufficient evidence of infringement for one of the patents, and that the damage award for the other patent was excessive.

로이터 통신은 4일(현지시간), 미국 반도체 기업 인텔이 2조8천억원대 규모의 특허 침해 소송 항소심에서 원심 판결을 뒤집고 승소했다고 전했다. 로이터 통신에 따르면 미 연방항소법원은 인텔이 VLSI 테크놀로지에 약 21억 8천 만달러를 배상하라고 한 원심판결을 파기하고 미국 특허법 역사상 가장 큰 판결 중 하나를 뒤집었다. 사건을 처음 심리한 텍사스주 웨이코 연방법원은 인텔이 반도체 제조 관련 특허 2건을 침해했다며 배상액을 각각 15억달러, 6억7천500만달러로 산정했다. 항소심 법원은 문제가 된 특허 2건 중 한 건은 침해 증거가 충분하지 않고, 나머지 한 건은 손해액 산정에 문제가 있다고 판단했다.
