Russia destroyed one of its own satellites with a ground-based missile, creating thousands of pieces of debris that have spread out into Earth orbit, and many thousands of smaller ones that cannot be traced. The State Department indicated that the debris field is a danger to the space station, and that it will significantly increase the risk to astronauts.
