British newspaper publishers have warned against Apple's introduction of a “web eraser,” arguing that blocking online ads threatens the sustainability of journalism. Apple is planning to introduce an AI-powered privacy feature in its next iOS 18 update. The feature will remove ads and unwanted website content. In a letter to Apple, the News Media Association (NMA), which represents more than 900 national, regional, and local titles in the UK, expressed concern about how the feature would affect the industry's digital revenue. “Online platforms such as web browsers and social networks are an important route for the public to access journalism, but they are also important for publishers to monetize their content in the digital marketplace,” the NMA argued. The possibility of automatic blocking of online ads is already causing considerable anxiety among publishers, who are already facing revenue pressures from separate actions by tech companies to throttle news traffic flows and a broader slowdown in spending across many parts of the market.
