Meta has released Llama 3.1 405B, the largest open-source AI model in history with 405 billion parameters. Since launching the Llama 3 model line in April this year, Meta has been working on a larger version with 400 billion parameters. The recently released Llama 3.1 405B model is a huge AI system described by Meta as “an unrivaled class AI system.” This latest model provides a powerful base model for a variety of use cases, such as multilingual conversational agents or long-text summarization, and allows users to easily implement it through the revised Stack API. Meta said these new large models will enable the AI research community to open up new workflows, such as synthetic data generation and model distillation. This giant Llama model is designed to compete with foundational models such as OpenAI's GPT-4 and Anthropic's new Claude 3.5 while remaining open source. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “The launch of Llama 3.1 will be a turning point for the industry where most developers will begin to use primarily open source,” adding, “We expect this approach to only grow in the future.”
