According to a report by Houston-area broadcaster KHOU 11, a Tesla Cybertruck went off a Texas road, crashed into a ditch, burst into flames, and killed the driver. This appears to be the first fatal accident involving Tesla's new electric pickup truck, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation, Reuters reported. The driver's identity has not yet been confirmed. The cause of the accident is unclear, but the Cybertruck is not yet equipped with an autopilot function, so it was not an accident related to this. Texas State Police said video from the scene showed the vehicle was almost completely burned, making identification of the vehicle and driver difficult.
The first Cybertruck accident occurred late last year near Palo Alto, with no injuries and minimal damage. With about 15,000 vehicles sold to date, accident reports have been on the rise recently. Tesla has issued four recalls, including one for an issue that could cause the accelerator pedal to stick. The Cybertruck has been criticized for poor build quality, malfunctions, and bizarre design decisions since its launch in November 2023.
