Stephen Scher, CEO of car rental company Hertz, is stepping down after taking the blame for the company's failure to purchase large numbers of Tesla electric cars, Bloomberg reported today. He will be replaced by Gil West, the former COO of GM's self-driving taxi unit Cruise. West will also join Hertz's board of directors. Hertz, which emerged from bankruptcy in 2020, surprised the industry in October 2021 when it announced it would purchase 100,000 Tesla electric vehicles. "The new Hertz will lead the way as a mobility company by building the largest electric vehicle rental platform in North America," the company said at the time. The announcement helped send Tesla's stock price soaring at the time. However, Hertz has since significantly scaled back its plans to purchase Tesla electric vehicles. Experts attribute the failure to Hertz's changing strategy, high EV prices, and lack of charging infrastructure. Cher joined the company after Hertz announced its plans to buy Tesla EVs, but she eventually resigned after taking responsibility for the failure.
